Description

Maria was born in San Juan Puerto Rico, her upbringing was filled with beach days, rainforest adventures, beautiful bird songs, sounds of the indigenous Coqui at night, and delicious food. Her family is from Cuba, so it was a magical intertwining of two different Caribbean cultures to form a new life. As a first-generation Cuban American, she feels the responsibility to spread the greatness of her heritage and share the challenges that assimilating as a Political Exile to a new country has.

Her work is inspired by botanical and majestic landscapes. She plays with gestural composition to create “pockets of conversation” her art is colorful and energetic, purposefully intriguing.

She left Puerto Rico to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence Rhode Island. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art and a bachelor’s in interior architecture later she attended Rhode Island College and completed her Master of Art in Teaching visual art with a thesis presented and approved by an Examination Committee, “A Consideration of the Social and Educational Status of Women and Gender Role Significance” Maria has taught studio art at many levels. “Teaching and sharing the creative process with children brings me great joy, it is a privilege to witness their discoveries.” She has exhibited her artwork in various venues in the States and internationally and has received multiple acknowledgments for her work.
