Winds Across Time
For the Central Florida Winds, music is a centuries-long continuum, rich with performance possibilities. They’ll reach back over a century and a half when they present, Winds Across Time on Sunday, February 22 at 3:00 PM, at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Road in north Melbourne. The concert program will feature compositions for wind band spanning 161 years, from 1844’s Hector Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture to Nathan Tanouye’s jazzy, “Kokopelli’s Dance” composed in 2005. Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Waltz No. 2” from 1938 features saxophones and trombones and is famous for its blend of light charm, while Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep” is dreamy and mystical. A highlight of Winds Across Time just may be Julius Fučík’s “The Grumbly Old Bear,”a comical 1910 “polka comique” showcasing the resonant and agile tones of the bassoon. It will be performed by CFW’s treasured 92-year-old bassoonist, David Borst. More musical surprises await during the afternoon program. Attendees to Winds Across Time are encouraged to arrive early for best seating. The50+members of the Central Florida Winds orchestra are a mix of professional woodwind, brass and percussion players, retired professional musicians, talented music teachers, and gifted high-school and college students. While all concerts by the Central Florida Winds are free, a donation of $10 is suggested. Richard Sabino is the founder and conductor of the Central Florida Winds. Leading the group in their 26th season, Sabino considers what makes music special –from every time period.
“What connects music through the ages is its timeless power and gifts,” said the Maestro. “It can be awe-inspiring and glorious, tender and reflective, soul-soothing and joyful. Music can make us laugh, cry, and heal—sometimes all in one unforgettable piece.”
Under the baton of Richard Sabino, the nonprofit Central Florida Winds and its chamber ensemble perform free concerts from the classical musical repertoire in the fall, winter and spring months throughout Brevard County. In addition to his work with the Central Florida Winds and the Riverside Chamber Orchestra in Cocoa Beach, Maestro Sabino has experience conducting orchestras in the U.S. and abroad.
