What is a BCA Next Generation Artist Residency?

A school selects a BCA teaching artist -visual, media, performing, or literary- to deliver a series of intensive classroom sessions that immerse students in a particular art form through project-based activities.

Residencies enhance existing curriculum as well as complement and enrich teachers’ instructional plans, particularly in disciplines where teachers require assistance, thereby providing professional development for participating educators. BCA staff provides coordination and assistance throughout the whole process.

During the last several years BCA has developed a new approach to its more traditional Artist Residencies program that better responds to schools’ strategic priorities and changes in educational trends. BCA’s Next Generation Artist Residencies seeks to enhance not only participants’ artistic skills but overall academic performance, fostering capacities for creativity and innovation, and equipping students with transferable life skills.

BCA’s artist residencies are not exclusively oriented to activity teachers (visual arts, music, dance, etc.). Any educator interested  in exploring the possibilities of arts integration and its potential to add innovation and novelty to instruction.

What is a STEAM Artist Residency?

STEAM residencies are a subset of BCA’ Next Generation Artist Residencies program. These residencies focus on integrating the arts in a cross-curricular fashion to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in new and creative ways.

During 2015-16,  six Next Generation residencies provided STEAM programs; participating schools and artists implemented projects that enhanced students’ technology and science literacy.
