Description

Behrendt combines portrait techniques of the late 1800’s with 20th century photojournalism to develop striking works of art. Using a Viet-Nam-vintage Nikon 35 mm slr, Behrendt captures history on film, then paints the silver gelatin originals with transparent oils. Two of his series juxtaposed, Space Launch and Wildlife, comprise a favorite exhibition “Birds of a Feather”. It showcases the promising coexistence of man’s most technologically advanced and challenging undertaking, with some of the most beautiful and endangered birds in the world. This show compares beautiful and powerful launches with the stunning birds that live within site of the launch towers.

Other series include: New York/Central Park, New Orleans/French Quarter, 356 Porsches, Sundance, Vanishing Florida, Florida Groves, Maine Coast, Washington D.C., and Aphrodite. He is currently working on his first book, “Emerging Florida: a portrait, or, a brief illustrated history of the United States. Melbourne Beach is the site of Ponce De Leon’s first landing on the North American Continent, and the space program that now carries us into the future, encompassing all 490 years of U.S. History.

Blue Sawtooth Studio, the home base of Behrendt’s creations, is located in Malabar, on the south branch of Turkey Creek. In addition to fine art, the studio offers “slice-of-life” portraits, limited addition prints, art for commercial applications, a line of wearable art, and photojournalistic services.
