Artist Statement
Painting is my life, my love, my entrance to a place where magic and miracles happen.
It all started years ago when I accidentally walked into a small local art show. I looked around and decided I had to learn to do that, to create something beautiful. The very idea of taking a blank piece of canvas, a white paper, a blank piece of illustration board and making it appear to be something else was exciting, energizing and empowering.
I started by learning to paint with oils. (I still go back to oils when I am stressed and need to relax into the process without planning.) The first time I put a brush to canvas and actually painted what I was looking at in a recognizable way filled me with wonder and amazement. From oils I gravitated to acrylics and then experimented with watercolor, ink and pastel. I have found that a mixture of different media is often the most satisfying to me. The mixing and juxtaposition of colors and textures satisfies me in a way that is undefinable. My paintings incorporate my personal feelings, some imaginary shapes, some suggested realistic figures, imagery and shapes as well as abstract shapes, colors and textures.
The exactitude of learning the principles and elements of painting and composition, how to mix and apply colors and then applying those rules, as well as knowingly breaking those rules, gives me the structure and foundation for expanding into many medias and experimenting in mixing these several medias.
My goal is to paint with simplicity and excitement using a collage of color, textures and shapes and hopefully the viewer will respond with enjoyment.
