Nancy Bindig
Artist Biography:
Nancy Bindig is both a fiber artist and art instructor. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Southern Maine. Nancy has taught adults and children in a variety of settings, including public school art classes, adult continuing education, artist in residence, and community outreach programs such as Spiral Arts, in Portland, ME. Nancy belongs to the Spacecoast Weavers and Fiber Artist Guild and the Handweavers Guild of America, and teaches classes at the Art Gallery of Viera in central Florida.
During the 1980’s Nancy produced a line of hand dyed and woven functional baskets, while operating her studio, Twining Basketry, in Saratoga Springs, NY. During that time, she was commissioned to weave 500 miniature willow basket replicas for R. John Wright’s limited edition Little Red Riding Hood doll. She has shown her work at various craft fairs; the “At Home with Contemporary Crafts” exhibit, Denver Art Museum; Schenectady Museum Designer Craft Gallery, Schenectady, NY; Cambridge Artists Co-op, Cambridge, NY; Runnels Hall Exhibit, Arts Council of Tamworth, NH; and in a collective showing of the Spacecoast Weavers and Fiber Artist guild at the BCC-UCF Joint Use Library, Cocoa, FL and the Harris Gallery at The King Center for the Performing Arts, Melbourne, FL.
In moving away from the basket form as a functional container, Nancy is exploring different techniques and combinations of materials in both her own adaptation of the “basket” and in teaching. Newer work is focused on utilizing basketry techniques with a mixture of materials, techniques and surface elements, in order to find forms more personally expressive. Believing that all experience becomes intricately woven into our lives, she combines a love of art, nature, basketry and teaching into her life. Nancy encourages others to discover their creative voice and to try art as a way for fun, personal expression and healing and to navigate their internal landscape!
