Maggie Davies
Floridians create authentic native artwork. The Davies have worked together in the creating of Native Florida Sea Flowers.
The sea flowers are made of oyster shells harvested from the Indian River in Grant. Most of the shell they use are from the Tecesta period. In 1750 a devasting hurricane blanketed the east coast shores of Florida in which 15 Spanish Galleons were distroyed. The tidal serge flowed over the barrier island and into the Indian River carrying oyster shells and other marine life. After this natural disaster the gold and black oyster shells became extinct.
The Davies have been able to retreive some of these shells from the River in Grant. The shells, which are gold and black in color are incorporated into the artwork.
The more common shells found today are white and blue in color.
