Biography
Rafael Picon was born in a small town in Andalucía, Spain; this village is near Puerto de Palos, from where Columbus set sail for America. We are two explorers seeking the new world. It is easy to see Spain’s loss as America’s gain when you encounter his variety of art styles.
Rafael came to the United States at the age of 19, 1974. He started working with metal when he was eight years old. He helped his father, Antonio, and his uncle Agustin craft steel and copper designs. Today Rafael is a skilled metal smith and sculptor who works in a variety of mediums. He describes his work as “Fused Art” using glass, copper, wood, bronze, marble, and just about any material to create unique art. As Rafael says, “Life is a silk dream followed by illusions that no one can live without.”
