Biography

Judy Edwards is an artist and writer who lives in Brevard County, Florida. Edwards studied art at the Honolulu Art Academy, Rhode Island School of Design, Newport Art Museum, and at the Ringling School in Sarasota, FL. Currently, Edwards is a member of the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, Florida. ‘I am a published author of Journeys: a grand adventure which tells the tale of my one year plein aire painting trip around the world in 1997-98 with my 13 year old daughter. As the years progressed, having experienced the grand gesture of world travel and painting, my interests turned away from realism into abstraction and my medium switched from oils to encaustic paint. I am inspired by Arthur Dove who bridged the space between realism and abstraction and worked in wax.

When I made the switch to abstract art and encaustic paint I underestimated the challenges when there is nothing in front of me to copy. Over the years, playing in the wax, as much as I can appreciate the skills involved in landscape and portrait paintings, I am thoroughly intrigued by painting whatever comes. The theme that has permeated my abstract paintings surround the concept of balance. There is an inherent truth in a fundamental acceptance of balance as a controlling force in art. I am witness to the moral balance existing in various forms. The dimensional shift in reality that is played out in my daily life is painted into my paintings, utilizing harmony, agreement and correspondence between these planes. Sometimes it is a simple but not, relationship between two forms. Other times it is a linear passage of time.

I utilize the inherent transparency of the encaustic medium to create a piece that records time, and which has a sense of balance be it color, form, shape or line. I find joy exploring the balance between structure and emotion as the essence of beauty.’ I love color, the act of creating, inspired directions, brilliant intentions and chance occurances. I am intrigued by the ability to translate and incorporate historical developments in a piece which adds to the richness and uniqueness of working in this medium.’
